So, I believe they did skirt the stage, but with cloth.  Cloth skirting could be turned up onto the stage, to admit sunlight underneath, for inspection and maintenance work.  To cast more light on a particular spot, shiny metal or a mirror could have been used to direct a beam of sunlight.  There is nothing novel in this idea about cloth skirting.
